Yoga and Happiness!

yoga and happinessI had such a wonderful time this weekend teaching a wonderful group of people at The Montreal Yoga Festival (YOCOMO).

Although I was nervous about tackling such a big subject, I was pleased with the time experience we shared in class!

I’m sharing here some of the principles we looked at. Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any comments or questions!

• My 3 main principles of happiness:
o Set the tone
Creating a space where it is easier for you to be happy. For me, this involves nature. This involves community. Travel. Light. Green space. We used essential oils: “Elevation” by DoTerra.
Where am I happiest?

o Move that body
– yoga asana – hiking – swimming – running – dancing –
How do I like to move?

o Gratitude + Presence.
Meditation. Being with the breath, the moment that is right now. Recognizing the amazing things. Not denying the difficult things, but choosing to focus on the good.
What am I grateful for right now?

• Define what happiness means to you:

• Other important ideas to remember:
o You deserve to be happy.
o Happiness takes some effort.
o Nothing exterior from you will “make you happy” but there are things that can help, so figure out what they are for you.

• Happy Asanas:
o Ado Mukha Svanasana (downward facing dog)
• Helps with anxiety (especially with support under forehead)
• Energizes the body
o Prasarita Padottanasana (wide angle standing forward bend)
• Calms nerves
• Combats fatigue
o Urdva dhanurasana (bridge)
• Stimulates the nervous system
• Generates feelings of well-being
o Camatkarasana (wild thing)
• The pose of wonder and astonishment
• Invites contentment
o Savasana
• Release and rejuvenate, reset the nervous system
• Stillness

The life changing magic of tidying up – Marie Kondo
This is how – help for the self – Augusten Burroughs
The Art of Attention – Elena Brower
The places that scare you – Pema Chodron
The Happiness Project – Gretchen Rubin
Living your yoga – Judith Lasater

“Miracles do happen. You must believe this. No matter what else you believe about life, you must believe in miracles. Because we are all, every one of us, living on a round rock that spins around and around at almost a quarter of a million miles per hour in an unthinkably vast blackness called space. There is nothing else like us for as far as our telescopic eyes can see. In a universe filled with spinning, barren rocks, frozen gas, ice, dust, and radiation, we live on a planet filled with soft, green leaves and salty oceans and honey made from bees, which themselves live within geometrically complex and perfect structures of their own architecture and creation. In our trees are birds whose songs are as complex and nuanced as Beethoven’s greatest sonatas. And despite the wild, endless spinning of our planet and its never-ending orbit around the sun–itself a star on fire–when we pour water into a glass, the water stays in the glass. All of these are miracles.”
I think it’s important to consider that billions of years before we were students and mothers and dog trainers and priests, we were particles that would form into star after star after star until forever passed, and instead of a star what formed was life; simplistic, crude, miraculous.

And after another infinity, there we were.

And this is why for you, anything is possible.

Because you are made out of everything.”

-Augusten Burroughs.
